In 2018, Yu Hong created a group of small-scale paintings, using acrylic to build a textured surface and an impasto along the upper edge of the canvas to provide a tactility of a time-worn wall. This technique reappeared in her later large-scale works, notably the ten-panel piece, Walking through Life (2019-22). The imagery Yu Hong selected for these smaller canvases often features simple, playful subjects drawn from her image archive, the internet, and her personal photography. In Ran Away (2018), a bare-chested male is depicted in a dynamic pose, as if fleeing, with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, capturing a spontaneous moment with a sense of immediacy and humor.
