Sean Scully's Broadway Shuffle, New York
The Broadway Mall Association, in partnership with NYC Parks’ Art in the Parks program and Lisson Gallery, with assistance from the Lincoln Square Business Improvement District, stages a major presentation of public works by Sean Scully entitled Broadway Shuffle (12 July, 2024 – 16 March, 2025).
Seven large-scale sculptures – each one a unique vertical stack composed from various configurations of metal, stone and wood – are presented at seven locations along the green medians at the center of Broadway from Lincoln Square to Washington Heights.
Here, Scully discusses the influences from art history and the surrounding city that led him to place these works along this famous thoroughfare.

"The first place I lived in Manhattan was on the very Upper West Side, near where one of the sculptures is. I was walking up and down on Broadway, on about 117th street. That's where I started out in this city. So I've had a strong relationship with Broadway, and of course, it was very inspirational for Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie"
"My work's always a portrait of the city. There's a sense of old and new in my work… a monument to what's left. That makes it more fragile or more approachable, instead of trying to make something perfect."
