Joanna Pousette-Dart in the studio
From her studio in SoHo and in preparation for a major new exhibition in New York, entitled Centering, Joanna Pousette-Dart discusses her considered approaches to the practice of painting. She reveals how her perception of the landscapes of Galisteo Basin in New Mexico and the wider world is reflected in stacked and multi-panelled works, variously balanced between symmetry and asymmetry, or between passages of light, space and shifting shades of color. From hand-drawn beginnings, the curvilinear forms are scaled up and fabricated as large panels, resulting in unexpected transitions and outcomes, conveying a sense of constant change.
I find that there's this period of trying things, that's very exciting. It's like, you come up to a fork in the road, and you have to choose, do I want to do this, or do I want to do that? And then maybe this thing doesn't work out, and then you do that other thing. At each stage, you discover different things. I mean, stuff happens, unexpected things happen, of course, and that's the magic, you know.
