‘Zhao Gang: Southward’ at D+ Art Museum, Shenzhen, China
5 December 2024
From 3 December 2024 to – 19 January 2025, D+ Art Museum presents ‘Southward’, a solo exhibition featuring 15 recent works by Zhao Gang. The presentation marks the artist’s return to Shenzhen since 2007 when he held his China museum solo debut at the He Xiangning Art Museum.
Central to the show are a series of paintings of still life florals and mounds of meat against domestic settings, where the juxtapositions manifest Zhao’s displaced sensibilities amidst his tumultuous emotional landscape.
Considered as an extension of his recent show ‘Carnivore’ at Lisson Bejing, ‘Southward’ represents the artist's ongoing exploration of the interweaving psychology, emotions, and lifestyles across history and the present. These works delve into the distorted and obscured perceptions and experiences resulting from such interactions, probing the fluidity of individual identity amidst cultural conflicts and historical ruptures.
