12 December 2024
Dexter Dalwood explores his relationship with the paintings of English artists in The National Gallery collection including paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Turner and more.
Dexter Dalwood’s paintings and prints are collages of visual imagery from art history, personal memory and political and cultural events from the past. His work reinterprets the genre of History Painting for a contemporary audience. This talk focuses on Dalwood’s relationship to ‘English Painting’ and its history, which is also the title of his current exhibition at the Lisson Gallery, London.
Unexpected views are monthly conversations between The National Gallery curators and some of the most important cultural practitioners of today, with discussions focusing on a selected masterpiece from the National Galleru's Collection. By allowing for new discussions of old works, the series aims for critical, counter-intuitive and joyful approaches to our collection, which reflect the breadth of contemporary artistic practice.
