The Madoo Conservancy in Sagaponack opens 'Spencer Finch: This room needs flowers.'
30 August 2021
In This room needs flowers., on view at The Madoo Conservancy from 20 August to 24 September 2021, Spencer Finch presents five intimate works that speak poetically to the patience and persistence of the avid gardener. Employing watercolour, woodblock and photography, Finch creates work that feels constructed of colour, time, light and air — recording and mimicking natural phenomena of falling leaves and cherry blossoms, chronicling blooms and observing the subtleties of a day in the life of a daisy. This room needs flowers. takes its name from a line in the poem Afterward by Madoo founder Robert Dash’s close friend and collaborator, James Schuyler.
The Madoo Conservancy is dedicated to the study, preservation, and enhancement of Madoo, the ever-changing, horticulturally diverse garden with historic structures established in 1967 by artist, gardener, and writer Robert Dash in the village of Sagaponack, New York.
