Sean Scully at Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, Barcelona, Spain

10 March 2025

From 14 March – 6 July, Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera presents a retrospective exhibition of works by Sean Scully. Featuring over 60 works, this exhibition gives visitors a unique view of the Dublin-born US-based artist’s career, from his more figurative beginnings to his more recent creations.

The exhibition explores his paintings, sculptures, drawings and photography, in which colour blocks, lines and textures convey deep emotions and forge unique bonds with the viewer. Each piece invites visitors to delve into a universe of rhythm and intensity that turns abstract painting into an introspective visual experience. One of the most prominent pieces is a sculpture in the courtyard on Passeig de Gràcia, created specifically for this exhibition, that surprises visitors at first sight and sets the tone for a visit full of rhythm, intensity and emotion.

Sean Scully's work has shifted the paradigm in American abstraction from Minimalism and its reduced vocabulary towards an emotional form of abstraction, returning to the metaphor and spirituality found in the European painting tradition. While known primarily for his large-scale abstract paintings, comprised of vertical and horizontal bands, tessellating blocks and geometrical forms comprised of gradated and shifting colours, Scully also works in a variety of diverse media, including printmaking, sculpture, watercolour and pastel. Having developed a style over the past five decades that is uniquely his own, Scully has cemented his place in the history of painting.
