'Sean Scully: Horizontal and Vertical’ at Daegu Art Museum, Daegu, South Korea

27 February 2025

From 18 March – 17 August, Daegu Art Museum presents, ‘Sean Scully: Horizontal and Vertical’, a retrospective exhibition of Sean Scully. Scully has played a pioneering role in leading abstract painting toward metaphor, spirituality, and humanism over the past several decades. He is particularly well known for his painting style based on rich colours and geometric forms.

This exhibition is the first large-scale retrospective of the artist to be held in Korea, displaying approximately 70 works including paintings, drawings, and sculptures, including representative works and new works from the 1960s to the present, providing a comprehensive view of his artistic journey.

The exhibition introduces a variety of works that allow a multi-layered approach to the artist’s world of art, including the artist’s representative large-scale paintings such as Wall of Light and Landline, as well as conceptual works from the artist’s early career. In particular, the large-scale steel sculpture Daegu Stack newly created for the Daegu Art Museum exhibition and 38, a stack of painted aluminium frames, will be installed for the first time in the outdoor space of the museum and the Mother Hall, respectively. This exhibition will provide an opportunity to experience the world of Sean Scully, a master who is creating the history of modern abstract painting, where colour, structure, and a delicate sensibility come together.
