An important artwork by Olga de Amaral has been acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago. Entorno Quieto 5 (1993) is part of a series of ten works made from 1986 to 1995. The group of woven sculptural screens are constructed from strips of dyed textiles made from hand-spun wool and horsehair.
Of the entire Entorno series, five are Entorno Quietos. Each Quieto is comprised of a circle that is both one with and separate from its encompassing space. This composition marks the beginning of the artist’s exploration of how basic geometric shapes interact with different materials, space and light. Entorno Quieto 5 is the last piece the artist made with horsehair, wool and dyes.
