New painting by Liu Xiaodong responding to Manet's Luncheon on the Grass now on view in LA
19 February 2022
From 19 February in Los Angeles, Liu Xiaodong's Newcomers in the Village - Response to Manet (2021) is included in Luncheon on the Grass at Jeffrey Deitch, Los Angeles, where over thirty of today’s most acclaimed painters respond to Édouard Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe (1863).
Regularly cited as the first modern painting, with artists creating works in response to it within two years of its exhibition in the 1863 Salon des Refusés, artists have turned to Manet’s painting as a source of radical and contradictory possibilities for painting.
Newcomers in the Village was painted by Liu on location in Changchun in Northern China, and depicts a group of fellow artists and friends who gatthered there for the project, recreating the poses of the original work's subjects amidst the city's verdant surrounding countryside.
The exhibition continues through 23 April. Find further information on the show here.
