Nature and sculpture combine in 'Ai Weiwei at Meijer Gardens: Natural State'
10 January 2017
'Ai Weiwei at Meijer Gardens: Natural State' is Ai Weiwei's first exhibition in the upper Midwest of the United States and the first of its kind for the artist at a botanic garden.
Opening on 27 January, Ai Weiwei's exhibition at Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, a centre for the congruence of botanics and sculpture, allows the artist an opportunity to use the diverse environments of the gallery space, conservatories and grounds. Central to the exhibition will be an exploration of Ai Weiwei's dialogue with nature, the elements of nature and natural elements as a means to convey the artist's ideas. Several iconic works from across the artist's repertoire, as well as new work specific to Meijer Gardens, will be featured. The artist's colossal Iron Tree, which was acquired by Meijer Gardens in 2015 in honour of its 25th anniversary, will also be on view.
