'More, More, More' at TANK Shanghai features Laure Prouvost installations
16 January 2021
Until 31 January 2021, TANK Shanghai presents 'More, More, More', a major group exhibition featuring new commissions and existing artwork by 28 Chinese and international artists and groups. Taking its title from that of the popular disco song of the mid-’70s, the exhibition features musical elements that epitomise the aesthetic excesses of early electronic dance music, such as verbal innuendo, a consistent “four on the floor” beat, lush studio strings, and, especially, excessive repetition. Working with the textures of a text, the sonority of language, the traces in a translation, or even the relationship between the visible and the microbial, 'More, More, More' features artworks in a variety of media that present and engage in multi-sensory modes of communication.
Among the works on view are sculptural and film installations by Laure Prouvost, including the 2016 tapestry, Behind the lobby doors, the pepper is in the right eye, drawing on the artist's use of manipulated language and the symbolism of her fabricated legsicon alphabet, and the video work Into All That Is Here (2014), exploring notions of lust by luring viewers into the frame of the screen, to then bombard them with a rapid-fire sequence of images and verbal commands.
