'Masaomi Yasunaga: In Holding Close' at Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, Auburn, AL, USA
24 January 2023
Masaomi Yasunaga opens his first solo institutional exhibition on 24 January at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama.
The artist presents a seleciton of new and recent work in varying scales, all displaying his unique process. While pottery is typically formed from clay, fired in a kiln and sealed with a finishing coat of glaze, Yasunaga adopts glaze as the primary material from which to build his sculptural works. Extending the legacy of Sodeisha group’s experimental ethos, he focuses on the process of creation to produce existentially and emotionally driven artworks, centred around the sculptural form rather than the functional use of the object.
