De Pont Museum in Tilburg opens major exhibition by Richard Long
18 February 2019
A major solo exhibition of sculpture, photography and text work by Richard Long has opened at the De Pont Museum in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Several works by Long were included in the Museum’s inaugural group exhibition in 1992, which has since featured works by Long in its permanent collection in long-term displays. This is however Long’s first solo show at De Pont, and his first in The Netherlands since 1979. The exhibition also marks Founding Director Hendrik Driessen’s last at the De Pont Foundation.Richard Long’s earliest works established a precedent that art could be a journey. The various photographs in the De Pont Museum exhibition present works made on travels from the mid-1980s to the present, in countries including India, the USA, South Africa, Norway and the UK. As well as text works, describing the criteria used to document elements of particular walks over a set period of time, the exhibition also features several important sculptural works spread across the Museum’s main gallery space, created using Long's preferred Cornish slate, each piece laid by the artist himself.
