Hiroshi Sugimoto at Winsing Art Place, Taipei, Taiwan

26 March 2025

From 12 April – 31 August, Winsing Art Place presents a solo exhibition by Hiroshi Sugimoto, featuring key photographic series that explore time, memory, and perception. The exhibition brings together works from Past Presence, Theatres, Seascapes, and Polarized Color, each reflecting Sugimoto’s meticulous approach to capturing the intangible.

From his meditative seascapes—where water and air converge in an eternal horizon—to his investigations into color and light inspired by Newton and Goethe, Sugimoto’s practice is deeply rooted in history, science, and philosophy. Past Presence reanimates modernist sculptures through a lens influenced by Japanese Noh theatre, while Theatres distill entire films into luminous, time-compressed images. In Polarized Color, Sugimoto extends his exploration of Newton's book 'Optiks', using expired Polaroid film to examine the spectrum beyond the Newtonian seven-color model.

Through these works, Sugimoto continues his lifelong study of vision and temporality, transforming fleeting moments into timeless images.
