Hélio Oiticica's Subterranean Tropicália Projects: PN15 unveiled at Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens
23 May 2022
Now open at Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, New York, Hélio Oiticica’s immersive environment, Subterranean Tropicália Projects: PN15, is based on a never-before-executed proposal by the artist from 1971, that he conceived while living in New York City. The work marks the first installation of a major outdoor sculpture by Oiticica in the United States, and is on view until 14 August.
PN15 draws inspiration from the City’s thriving underground culture, encouraging visitors to drift through its circular structure of curving corridors for a multi-sensory experience. Featuring plants and image projections that create a play of light, shadow, changes in opacity, framing, and orientation, PN15 is a space for collective creativity and leisure, dubbed “creleisure” by the artist.
