Djurberg & Berg at ACCA and ARoS
20 October 2015
The Swedish duo Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg open two new exhibitions in October 2015: 'The Secret Garden' at the Australia Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) in Melbourne, Australia (10 October - 22 November 2015); and 'FLICKERS OF DAY AND NIGHT', the third exhibition in the FOCUS // NEW NORDIC series showcasing young Nordic talent at ARoS in Aarhus, Denmark (24 October 2015 - 21 February 2016).
'The Secret Garden', Djurberg & Berg's first solo exhibition in Australia, presents a newly commissioned, site-specific installation complete with sculpture, sound and video works mixed to a dazzling effect characteristic of the artists' style. A survey of their claymation films that first brought the artists international attention will also be on show.
For 'FLICKERS OF DAY AND NIGHT', Djurberg & Berg present three large-scale installations, including The Gates of the Festival, which was shown at Lisson Gallery in September 2014, and two works created specifically for ARoS: The Clearing and A Thief Caught in the Act. The installations consist of rotating podiums with towering flowers made of plasticine, alongside colourful birds perched on tables, interspersed with sound and video works. The exhibition aims to visualise the unbecoming aspects of the human psyche, from angst and melancholy to beauty and jealousy, staged within a colourful and surreal parallel universe.
