Collaborative project between Richard Deacon and Mrđan Bajić unveiled in Belgrade
21 October 2019
The first stage of a collaborative project between Richard Deacon and Serbian artist Mrđan Bajić, entitled From There to Here, opened in Belgrade, Serbia, on Friday 11 October. Since September 2008, the two artists have been working on what was originally the winning proposal for a new public sculpture in the capital. In it's final form, From There to Here will also incorporate a 100 metre-long footbridge linking Belgrade's Kalemegdan Fortress with the Sava Promenade, spanning a busy four lane road and abandoned railway before descending nine metres towards the waterfront, and crossing the former border between east and west Belgrade. On Sunday 13 October, Deacon participated in a panel discussion, 'Sculpture in the City - Case Studies', at Belgrade Cultural Centre. The event brought a group of artists, architects, curators and historians together with the local public to discuss examples of public sculpture and memorials from across the world that have been developed through competition entry, and to evaluate the reception of select realised projects considering their historical, spacial and cultural context.
