‘Barbara Steveni: I Find Myself’ featuring Laure Prouvost at Modern Art Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom

13 March 2025

Until 8 June 2025, Modern Art Oxford presents ‘Barbara Steveni: I Find Myself’ featuring Laure Prouvost. Barbara Steveni often worked outside the art gallery creating artworks that were multidisciplinary and research based, that often took place without its participants realising. With a career spanning seventy years, Steveni has had a broad influence on artists from many different generations. This exhibition will present work by some of Steveni’s key collaborators as well as new commissions created by artists in response to her work. These new commissions are by Laure Prouvost, Anne Bean and Eloise Hawser.

Language – in its broadest sense – permeates the video, sound, installation and performance work of Laure Prouvost. Known for her immersive and mixed-media installations that combine film and installation in humorous and idiosyncratic ways, Prouvost’s work addresses miscommunication and ideas becoming lost in translation. Playing with language as a tool for the imagination, Prouvost is interested in confounding linear narratives and expected associations among words, images and meaning. She combines existing and imagined personal memories with artistic and literary references to create complex film installations that muddy the distinction between fiction and reality.
