Ai Weiwei creates limited-edition print to support CIRCA public art programme
12 October 2021
Ai Weiwei has created a special edition of 51 hand-typed and signed prints in support of @circa.arts's #CIRCAECONOMY initiative. The CIRCA platform utilises public platforms typically used for mass advertising, such as the digital billboards in London's Piccadilly Circus, to promote culture, "giving public space back to the people and opening culture up to all". Ai Weiwei launched the project in October 2020 with a 60 minute-long film.
To celebrate their one year anniversary, CIRCA are screening a series of works by artists and activists responding to the question, 'Where do we go from now?', including a video by Ai that will be shown alongside chapters from his 2020 film on Sat 30 October. Ai's limited-edition etchings are also being sold to raise funds for a range of charities supporting the UK cultural sector.
Proceeds from the prints will enable the continuation of its free public art programme in London, Tokyo and Seoul, as well as a the £30,000 cash prize that will be awarded by Marina Abramović to the CIRCA x @dazed Class of 2021 Winner later this week.
