Watch now: A discussion on the work of Hélio Oiticica
14 January 2021
To coincide with the exhibition Hélio Oiticica, on view in New York from 28 October 2020 until 23 January 2021, Lisson Gallery hosted a special online discussion chaired by art historian, writer and curator Lynn Zelevansky on Thursday 14 January at 1pm EST / 6pm GMT.
The panel features additional experts on Oiticica's work including Tanya Barson, Chief Curator, MACBA, Barcelona; Fernando Cocchiarale, art critic and curator, Rio de Janeiro; and Vivian Crockett, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, Dallas Museum of Art.
Watch the full conversation, where the group speaks about a variety of topics, ranging from Oiticica's role in Brazilian culture in the 1960s, and race and class in Brazil; to his time in London, including his seminal Whitechapel show in 1969, as well as the general reception of Latin American art in the UK. They grapple with the influence of black culture on his oeuvre, and the importance influence of musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones.
