Nébula 8 is part of the Nébulas series by Olga de Amaral executed between 2014 and 2019 that consists of 27 pieces. The works in this series are composed of squared layers of Japanese paper that hide threads left visibly loose around all the edges. The surface of the square is usually painted, green and blue in the case of Nébula 8 and covered with flat grid like figures that are composed to emphasize the square format of the paper chosen as the canvas in this series. The sensation of chaos and the tactile quality of these pieces allude to the idea of a nebula ‘cloud’ or ‘fog’ in Latin) - a distinct luminescent part of the cosmos, which can consist of gasses and interstellar dust. In the realm of astronomy, Nebulae are places of origination, of star-formation, regions of cosmic birth be they stars, planets or other objects. Through the use of abstract, geometrical figures and the powerful glimmer of silver, the spectator can relate to the cosmic dimension of birth —be it cosmic or human— and existence as a fortuitous phenomena. This series contrasts the field of visual action, the rigorous mathematical bidimensionality with the chaos and unknown space beyond our visual, spiritual or human understanding.
