Ren Jie uses physical materials and artisanal techniques as a gateway to narrative, subverting established linguistic conventions through the improvisational nature of the materials. Concurrently, she overlays personal identity experiences with historical archetypes, foundational roots, and literary imagination. This confluence forms a complex matrix of contradictions, where the interweaving gradually unveils hidden backstories, which are subsequently reinterpreted and reexamined within the current context.
Ren Jie graduated from the Fine Arts College of Shanghai University in 2010. In 2014, she graduated from China Academy of Art. Night Watch series coalesces materials, everyday images as well as visual and physical experiences of contemporary life through the lens of the entanglement between textile techniques and modern computer technology. This series invites viewers to engage with the dialogue between space and materiality in a world dominated by fleeting digital viewing experiences, generating new interpretations on the subjects of labour and gender and unleashing the imagination around these topics from a literature perspective.
