Christopher Le Brun: September Paintings
13 December 2023 – 31 January 2024
Some of the earliest influences on Christopher Le Brun’s work include the visionary landscapes of Samuel Palmer and William Blake. Whether in abstract or figurative form, all three painters share a symbolic language of dream and imagination. Since returning to live in the West Country a year ago, his awareness of the change in seasons has had a considerable impact on Le Brun’s practice.
The effects of light are always more pronounced when experienced in nature, and these qualities have led him to produce canvases that reveal subtle shifts in colour, along with a sense of time passing. His new home is set amongst deep valleys, woods and small fields; and just as these different territories have their own tonal atmosphere, so do each of his paintings.
Completed this Autumn, the works comprising the ‘September’ series cover a range of moods and implied movement. For Le Brun, colour, light and texture stand as equivalents for sound and orchestration, in which case we might also - given their thematic link - name these recent paintings a suite.
