Tony Oursler’s H2oh, is part of the artist’s Silhouette series of works. Here, layers of disparate imagery seemingly blend into and through one another across the human silhouette. Collage-like elements are subdued by the way the imagery is layered and flows through the shape of the body. Indeed, each limb and section of the canvas is unique, yet the layered quality of the composition blurs the lines between beginning and end, coming together to create a comprehensible whole– a dream-scape mosaic. H2oh evokes the flow of imagery and information which is continually circulating through the internet’s collective memory. The way new images and information are spread through social media is an especially important reference here, as Oursler’s considers the implications of targeting content and the increasing ways the internet is curated for specific audiences. Similarly to the layers of dream-like imagery within the silhouette, today's media aggregates and combines information to create a different experience tailored to each person’s unique inclinations.
